The Matthew Series 16. The Unbelievable Demand

Matthew 10:34-39 New International Version (NIV) 34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn “‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— 36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[a] 37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. So, there is a big di

The Matthew Series 15. The Fear of God

Matthew 10:26-33 New International Version (NIV) 26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[a] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. 32 “Whoever acknowledges m

James Faith that Works 8. Only if the Lord wills

James 4:13-17 New International Version (NIV) Boasting About Tomorrow 13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. It is good to be sharing with you again in the morning; I have decided to continue on the serie

The Matthew Series 14. Sheep among wolves

Matthew 10:16-26 English Standard Version (ESV) Persecution Will Come 16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, an

The World, the Church and the Cross 6. The Great Divide

1 Corinthians 2: 14 - 16 This is the final message in the series. We can summarise the main things we have learned in 5 key statements: 1. The people of the world will always regard the message of the cross as foolishness. Nothing about it will make sense to them even though the message of the cross is true wisdom from God. 2. God destroys human pride by choosing weak and overlooked people for his family. He does this so that no one can boast in his presence. 3. We must preach Christ and him crucified. We must be people of one message and we must preach it continually because it is the world’s only hope. 4. We should not be surprised that the world does not understand us because it doe

The Matthew Series 13. Go and Preach the Good News of the Kingdom

Matthew 10:1-15 New International Version (NIV) Jesus Sends Out the Twelve 10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you g

The World, the Church and the Cross 5. How We Know What We Know

1 Corinthians 2: 10 - 13 4 important truths about the Holy Spirit and the believer: 1. The Holy Spirit reveals the truth of God to us v. 10 To “reveal” means to make clear that which was previously hidden or unknown. The Holy Spirit “turns on the lights” for us so that we can see the truth of God. If the Holy Spirit did not “turn on the lights” for us, we would still be in the darkness. 2. The Holy Spirit can reveal the truth of God to us because He knows the mind of God v. 11 Paul argues by analogy from the lesser to the greater. Even among people who know each other very well, communication is difficult at best. When my wife and I have a conversation, there is always the challenge of c

The Matthew Series 12. The Kingdom and Harvest

Matthew 9:32-38 New International Version (NIV) 32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.” The Workers Are Few 35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 The

The World, the Church and the Cross 4. What the World Doesn't Know

1 Corinthians 2: 6 - 9 Underline 1 word and pay special attention to it - Paul repeats it 4 times. It’s the word “wisdom.” There is the “message of wisdom” that Paul shared with others. There is the “wisdom of this age” that really is no wisdom at all. There is God’s “secret wisdom” that is really “hidden wisdom” that the world has never understood and does not understand now. Wisdom comes from 1 of 2 places—God or the world. God’s wisdom leads us in one direction; the world’s wisdom leads us in another direction. God’s wisdom and the world’s wisdom stand forever at odds with each other. You can have one or the other, but you can’t have both at the same time. This principle explains so much
