Our Church 2016 - more people more like Jesus the commission

More people - More like Jesus: the Commission Key Verse: Acts 2:42-47 Why are you even here this morning? I mean honestly what’s the point? Okay now that I have freaked you out a little; let’s really address this; why come to church week by week and listen to sermon after sermon? Church today has become another product made to make me feel better about myself. Unfortunately that was never the intention of the church. God made the church to work out His plan for the world in and through His people. We, church, come to church to be a part of that work! If you get that this morning we will be a more powerful church and you will find greater fulfilment in church than you have ever had. Now, over

Seek Him 3 With your body/strength

Seek Him 3. With your body or strength Key Text: Jeremiah 29:13 and Mark 12:30. When you picture a man of God, what comes to mind? Generally it is a picture of a man who for some odd reason has a long beard who dresses a little off and floats half a meter off the ground right? And so how can we and non-floating, relatively well dressed individuals ever get there? Some of us have a semi-gnostic view of the world. Which is everything Spiritual is good and everything material is bad. Therefore the only way I can truly become a man/woman of God is to deny every aspect of myself. This simply is not the case, and in fact may lead you further away from God and not closer to him. Let’s look at this

Our Church 2016 – More People, More Like Jesus 2. Give and Go

Our Church 2016 – More People, More Like Jesus 2. Give and Go Acts 2: 42 - 47 As a dad and his family were driving home after church he started complaining: “The music was too loud. The sermon was too long. The announcements were unclear. The building was cold. The people were unfriendly.” He went on and on, finding fault with virtually everything. His son, who was sitting in the backseat, was quiet for a moment as he thought back to what his dad had put in the offering and said, “Daddy, I thought it was a pretty good service for R5!” For many pastors, a sermon on giving and going ranks up there with getting a root canal treatment. Some pastors apologize for sermons on stewardship. I don’t b

Seek Him 2. With your Soul

Seek Him 2. With your Soul Key Texts: Jeremiah 29:13 Deuteronomy 4:29 Deuteronomy 6:5 Mark 12:30 We are week two in our series seek Him, looking at our task to seek after God. Last week we saw that if we seek after God with all our hearts we will find Him! In other words when you seek God He shows Himself to us. It is never a fruitless journey to seek after God. We saw that the heart was our inner man or our deepest convictions, tonight I want to look at what it might look like to seek God with you soul. Deuteronomy 4:29 states 29 But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. Now let’s read this with another popula

Seek Him 1. With your whole heart

Seek Him 1 – With your whole heart Key Text: Deuteronomy 4:29 and Jeremiah 29:13 As we start out this year I want to give you all the tools at my disposal to ensure growth in your life. To ensure that you know God and the goodness of His grace, both intimately and powerfully. That you grow in holiness and efficacy in your ministry. This is the year that seek God. Now as I speak to fellow Christians I find no lack of intention, what I find is a lack of action and commitment. We tend to have the best intentions but it is the following through of those commitments that is our undoing. And I guess that is where this series was birthed. One night as I couldn't sleep, and as my usual course of act

Our Church 2016 More people more like Jesus 1. gather and grow

Our Church 2016 – More People – More Like Jesus 1. Gather and Grow Acts 2: 42 - 47 How many of you made at least one New Year resolution? One guy decided on this game plan: “My New Year’s Resolution is simply to remember to write 2016 instead of 2015.” I want to propose that at the beginning of 2016 we have the unique opportunity to make a significant kingdom impact as individual Christians and as a Christian community. But it won’t happen automatically just because we’re now in a new year. Here’s the main idea of the message: The depth of our devotion will determine our impact. We’re going to give attention to 4 defining values of our church beginning with Gather and Grow this week and we’

New Years 2016 3. why We Never Give Up

New Year 2016 3. Why We Never Give Up 2 Corinthians 4: 16 - 18 All of us struggle with the difference between “head knowledge” and “heart knowledge.” You never know what you truly believe until the crisis comes. “Let us not lose heart.” That’s exactly what Paul says twice in 2 Corinthians 4. “Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart” (v. 1). “Therefore we do not lose heart” (v. 16). NLT puts it, “That is why we never give up.” That is the great cry. “We never give up.” In this passage Paul reveals the secret of Christian endurance. Here are 3 reasons why we never give up. 1. We Experience Life in the Midst of Death v. 16 When Paul says that outwar

Why Be Happy

Why – Why be happy? Good evening to you all. Welcome to our first Sunday evening service of 2016. We here trust that the Lord can and will use these services to minister to the needs of His people here. Tonight I’m continuing my Why series; towards the end of last year – the last time I preached – I shared about Why we should seek God. Sometimes we get so stuck on what we should do, and my aim in this series is to explore why we should do those things (which, oftentimes, we already know we should be doing). So last time I explored with you why we should seek God – Tonight I’m going to be exploring with you, as you can see at the top of your bulletin insert, Why be happy? Over the holidays I

New Year 2016 2. Why We Keep Believing

New Year 2016 2. Why We Keep Believing Hebrews 11: 13 - 16 If you don't believe in heaven, you can switch off now. That may seem like an odd way to begin, but it's a true statement, and truth is always a good place to start. Everything in this sermon is about heaven. If you don't believe in heaven, then a lot of this sermon won't make any sense to you because there are lots of things that Christians do that can only be explained because we believe in heaven. Therein lies the problem. We believe in a place that you can't see, feel, touch or otherwise lay hold of using your 5 senses. Heaven by definition lies beyond the veil of this visible, seen, touchable, tangible, extremely real-to-us wor
