Filled Week 2 Keeping up

Filled week 2 Keeping up Key Text: Galatians 5:25 We are week two of a study on the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. Last week we looked at what it looked like to be filled with the Spirit of God; how if you are a Christian then you have the Spirit of God. And if you have the Spirit of God then being filled is not gaining something you don’t have; it is surrendering to and being dependent upon the Spirits power and guidance in our life. Now with that as a conclusion last week; it might have seemed a little up in the air and pie in the sky. One must ask if we are to live out lives in dependency and surrender to the Spirit’s power in our lives what does that actually lo

Holding onto faith in desperate times 5. When You Feel Like Giving Up

Holding on to Faith in Desperate Times 5. When You Feel Like Giving Up Habakkuk 3 Our world is in trouble. South Africa is in trouble.I agree. We all agree. Evil is running rampant in our world. Jesus must be glorified in our lives. We desperately need the Holy Spirit to fall on us. “Before it is too late.” We must pray for God’s mercy while we can. There is a time when judgment comes. We have many phrases for this: When the chickens come home to roost, when skeletons come out of the closet, when it’s time to pay the piper. Sooner or later we all face the consequences of the choices we have made. This is true for nations and for individuals. You cannot mock God forever, you cannot ignore him

Filled week 1. Getting Started

Filled week 1 – Getting Started Key Text: Romans 8:9-12 and Ephesians 5:18 Intro The problem of living after Pentecost is the idea that the Spirit dwells within us is not as spectacular as it should be. It is just kind of part of being a Christian, and so because of this dulling of the wonder we limit our experience. The truth is that we have the Spirit of the Living God dwelling within us; empowering us; and conforming us into the image of Jesus Christ. This truly is a thought and a reality that should blow us away in every way! So I wish to guide you through a four week study that we will be doing called “Filled” where we will look at the reality of the Spirit in the life of the believer.

Holding on to Faith in Desperate Times 4. Choices - Babylon or Jesus

Holding on to Faith in Desperate Times 4. Choices – Babylon or Jesus? Habakkuk 2 We have heard it said many times that our choices matter. We know this is true because all of life is shaped by the choices we make. We make our choices and our choices turn around and make us. I realize that at the age of 61, I am nothing more than the sum total of all the choices I have made over all the years of my life. I am what I am, where I am, doing what I do, as a result of thousands of choices made over a long period of time. Choices. So important. So crucial. We make our choices and our choices turn around and make us. Near the end of his life Moses challenged his people this way: "This day I call th

Start with a quote by Alan Chambers: “Most gay men and women [assume], that because we have same-sex attractions, the only way to a satisfactory life is to embrace those attractions, act on them, and essentially build a life around them. But for many of us, the sad truth was that accepting our attractions and acting on them was a dead-end street leading to profound despair.” One of the responsibilities that we have as God’s people living in a pagan world is to be those who call out. We call out to the lost, telling them God’s plan of salvation. We call out to the saved, encouraging, admonishing and at times rebuking one another. We are those who call out. One of the tasks of a pastor, one of

Holding on to Faith in Desperate Times 3. The Text that Changed the World

Holding on to Faith in Desperate Times 3. The Text That Changed The World Habakkuk 2: 4, Romans 1: 17 We need to hold 2 texts together because one is the key to the other. Romans 1: 17: For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” Paul is quoting the OT from Habakkuk 2: 4: “Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.” Everyone agrees that this is the central verse of Habakkuk. It is certainly one of the most crucial verses in the Bible. This is the text that changed the world. This text first changed a man, and t

Following God in a Pagan World

We heard an amazing testimony this morning from Fanie about his recent trip. The story that stood out for me the most was the story of his trip into the town where they were amongst militant unbelievers. While those who attended the training course were being instructed that they would have to go out and plant Churches, Fanie shared that to do so would also include facing severe consequences. Maybe the building they were meeting in might be burnt down; perhaps they might have to endure beatings, or worse. What a challenge to be facing! And yet of the 170 people in the room, 140 stood up and were willing to go right then and there. We all face the same question: What would I do if I were in t

Holding on to Faith in Desperate Times 2. Questions for God

Holding on to Faith in Desperate Times 2. Questions for God Habakkuk 1: 12 - 2: 4 What do you do when you’ve prayed to God and you don’t like the answer you’ve received? *You applied for the university/college of your dreams, but they said no. *You interviewed for a new job, but they found someone more qualified. *You asked God for healing, but the doctor says the chemo didn’t work. *You prayed and prayed to find a husband, and after all these years he has not yet found you. *You asked her to marry you, and she said no. *You sunk your life savings into a new business only to see it fail within a year. *You moved across the country to take a new job, but it didn’t work out, and now you are un
