What a Faithful God - 4. Faithful to the Defeated

Lamentations 3: 22 - 23 In 1954 George Beverly Shea introduced a song to Great Britain during the Billy Graham crusade in London. Writing in 1941, Thomas Obadiah Chisholm penned these words of personal testimony: “My income has not been large at any time due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me until now. Although I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that he has given me many wonderful displays of his providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness.” The hymn he wrote is based on our text. He called it simply "Great is Thy Faithfulness." This hymn, which has so encouraged God’s people, is based o

What a Faithful God - 3. Faithful to the Fallen

Luke 22: 31 - 32 This text gives us a peek behind the scenes of history. For just a moment the veil is lifted, the curtain parted and we catch a glimpse of amazing things that are normally off-limits to human beings. In these words of Jesus we learn about a high-level conference between God and Satan. If that sounds strange to you, let me remind you that Job 1 records a similar scene when it tells us that one day when the angels presented themselves to the Lord, Satan came with them to stand before the Lord. But there is a crucial difference. In Job 1 it is God who suggests Job as a suitable target for the devil; in our text it is Satan himself who desires to "sift" Peter like wheat. From t

What a Faithful God - 2. Faithful to the Tempted

1 Corinthians 10: 13; Genesis 39 Oscar Wilde - "I can resist anything except temptation." We smile when we read those words because they speak about the human condition. Temptation pays a visit to each of us every day and most of us struggle to say no. C. S. Lewis - "no man knows how bad he is until he has tried to be good." It is precisely because we can’t resist temptation that we learn how bad we really are—and how greatly we stand in need of God’s grace. Temptation is not new - it is the same for us as it was for Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Satan tempts us today in the same way he tempted Jesus in the wilderness. From the very beginning a battle has raged for the souls of men and

What a Faithful God 1. Always Trustworthy

Deuteronomy 7: 9 For the next 6 Sundays we will be looking at what the Bible says about the faithfulness of God. In order to orient our thinking in the right direction, here are 5 Scriptures that introduce the topic: Exodus 34:6—"And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.’" Deuteronomy 7:9—"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands." Isaiah 49:7—"This is what the Lord says—the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel—to him who was despised and abhorred by the na

New Year 2010 - Let Us Fix Our Eyes on Jesus

Hebrews 12:1, 2 As I thought and prayed over our congregation, the conviction came to me that we should intentionally focus on the Lord Jesus Christ. I was drawn to this verse because of the command in the first phrase: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus.” That speaks of united action - “Let us.” It speaks of a definite action-“fix our eyes.”And it speaks of a single aim-“on Jesus.” My prayer is that we as a congregation will come to know him better than ever, to love him more and more, to serve him with renewed enthusiasm, and to declare His Name with increasing vigour. We want to show that Christ not only speaks today but that he is the answer to our deepest needs. The cross must be at the c
